Beehive Bone Meeting
Orthopaedic research findings & innovative surgical techniques from New Zealand and overseas will be presented at The Beehive today at a scientific meeting for Wellington & regional orthopaedic surgeons. The meeting, organised by the NZ Orthopaedic Association, is to mark the visit of 6 overseas orthopaedic surgeons who are ABC fellows (surgeons chosen by their home countries as having outstanding abilities & potential.)
Papers being presented today include:
a.. Wellington School of Medicine's Dept of Surgery, Peter Devane, pre-empting the international launch of his software that can measure the wear of materials used in hip joint replacements;
b.. ABC fellow, Kristy Weber (from Texas & the first ever female ABC fellow) talking about innovative surgery performed on a child with arm bone cancer, where a leg bone was used to replace the removed bone & it is now looking & functioning like normal arm bone
c.. ABC fellow, Mark Easley (Duke University) on ankle arthritis developments, including ankle joint replacement;
d.. ABC fellow Nizar Mohomed (Toronto) about the impact of patient expectations on outcomes of hip surgery AND about rates & outcomes of primary & revision hip replacements in US medicare population
e.. ACC chief David Rankin talking about NZ's system
