Right To Life NZ congratulates Doctors and Nurses
PRESS RELEASE BY RIGHT TO LIFE NEW ZEALAND
Recent news by Ruth Berry in the The Christchurch Press 12/12/2002 has raised concerns that doctors and nurses are rejecting abortions and anything to do with abortions.
Doctors and nurses who reject abortions are to be congratulated. They, not the abortionists, are being to true to their time honoured Hippocratic oath.
Doctors and nurses should retain the right to refuse abortions on ethical grounds through the Contraception, Sterilisation and Abortion Act(CSA) of 1977.
Doctors and nurses need to unite on this issue especially if legislative changes are on the agenda of pro-abortion MPs.
Ruth Berry inaccurately states that the DHBs have legal obligations to ensure women have access to abortion services. DHBs are under no legal obligation whatsoever.
This is clearly stated in the CSA Act where DHBs may provide 'services'.
They certainly are not legally bound to provide these services. Dr Rothwell of the Abortion Supervisory Committee stated in the report that she could not explain the growing reluctance of doctors and nurses rejecting abortion.
The answer is obvious. Taking the life of an unborn child can never be part of the mainstream medical service of health providers.
We applaude those DHBs who have not succumbed to he pressure from the Ministry of Health pro-abortion officails and from people like the Abortion Supervisory chairwoman Lesley Rothwell.
Right To Life NZ supports the pro-life position of these doctors and nurses. We are all inspired by their stance which no amount of education at Medical School can alter.
