Urgent support needed for disabled learners
CCS shares the concern in the Education Review Office that disabled children in mainstreamed classes are not getting enough help, states CCS chief executive, Rob Williams.
“We strongly support the principle of an inclusive and successful education for disabled children. The Ministry of Education must strengthen its commitment to disabled children by ensuring that:
It has a clear and comprehensive understanding of each child’s support needs necessary for a successful and inclusive education Services are put in place to deliver those supports The child and family are central to the planning and procurement of those arrangements.
“Our members are concerned that Government funding is often not well-linked with individual needs, and this is borne out by this ERO report.
“We call on the Ministry of Education to act, and act now, to ensure that disabled children get a fair go at an inclusive, successful education”.
