The latest development in Transit New Zealand’s Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) is now operating on the
Auckland Harbour Bridge. The work is part of Transit’s ongoing upgrade of the ATMS.
The ATMS has been operational since late 1999 and comprises variable message signs, closed circuit television and lane
control signals, such as those on the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
The system operates throughout Auckland and provides enhanced safety and reliable information to the travelling public
such as incidents and road conditions ahead. The system also suggests actions for drivers to take.
The new traffic signals on the Harbour Bridge are designed to make it easier to advise about road conditions and lane
changes ahead.
The most noticeable change on the bridge is that the green lane arrows are no longer used and the new lane control
signals will be shown only when there is an incident or work ahead.
There are four main signals that will only show when appropriate. No arrows or lights mean that the lane is open. Four
flashing lights indicates that the lane is open but there is an incident or similar ahead and traffic should proceed
slowly and with caution. An orange arrow signals an incident or work ahead, traffic should move into the next lane. A
speed limit indicated means traffic should slow down to the shown speed and a red cross means that the lane is closed.
The green arrows that were previously used on the bridge have been removed because they are not used anywhere else in
the motorway system.
