Some security measures introduced after September 11 to enhance safety on aircraft are to be relaxed.
From July 1, metal knives will be reintroduced as eating utensils for passengers and crew, and passengers will again be
allowed to carry on board some items that were recently prohibited, including knitting needles and nail scissors.
The relaxation will not apply to airlines that have United States ports on their route network. Aviation Security
Service General Manager Mark Everitt said today that the move was supported by the airline industry.
“Security matters have been under constant review by an industry working group since September 11,” Mr Everitt said.
“It is now considered that the level of risk has reduced to the point where we can relax some of the security measures
imposed at that time.”
Items that passengers will again be allowed to carry on domestic and international (except US-bound) aircraft include:
walking canes and umbrellas, nail clippers, nail files, nail scissors of no longer than 10cm in total length, tweezers,
safety razors including disposable razors, syringes (with medication and professionally printed labels identifying
medication and manufacturer’s name), eyelash curlers, knitting needles (when profiled against the carrier or user), and
metal combs provided they don’t have sharp handles.
