Wellingtonians are the country's most sophisticated users of the Internet, according to a survey of New Zealand cyber surfers carried out by NFO Research for Internet company Xtra.
The survey found that Wellingtonian Net users were more likely to purchase goods and services online, have been using the Internet longer, and have a post graduate degree or work in a profession than Net users in other New Zealand cities.
The survey found that 27% of Wellington cyber surfers used the Net to purchase goods and services, compared to 15% of Net users across the whole of New Zealand.
Residents of the capital were more likely to be old hands when it comes to the Net. 17% of Wellington Net users have been online for more than six years, compared with just 10% of all Net users in New Zealand.
14% of surfers in the capital have a post graduate degree compared with just 8% nationally, while 38% of Wellington Net users are professionals, compared with 27% across the country as a whole.
Xtra spokesperson Matt Bostwick says Wellingtonians are also among the highest users of the Internet in New Zealand.
"As well as being officially New Zealand's top town, the capital can claim the title of New Zealand's most wired city," he says.
Bostwick says Xtra has been upgrading its network in Wellington to meet the growing demand for Internet services in the region, and is also launching an advertising campaign in the capital to celebrate Wellington's status as New Zealand's most sophisticated Internet city.
