Gathering Recycling Commitment Only Lip Service

Published: Thu 21 Mar 2002 01:37 PM
The Gathering organisers supposed commitment to recycling is just lip service, according to Duncan Eddy of the Dunedin Environment Centre, who was contracted to co-ordinate the onsite recycling program at this New Years Dance Party in Golden Bay.
“ The Gathering supposedly promotes positive ideals, but this is just a marketing ploy. This years Gathering was only an attempt to get the organisers of this sick bloated event out of debt.”
“The Gathering has no environmental integrity. We were issued with next to no resources, and had to make do with whatever was lying around. It took 2 days before the recycling crew was even provided with gloves or rubbish bags”
“The Gathering failed to arrange for any rubbish and recyclables removal. After 3 days of intense work, having achieved a high rate of refuse separation and recovery against the odds, the Recycling crew were told to the recycling plan was off, were where no just rubbish collectors, and our well intentioned efforts were in vain. We were expected to concentrate refuse in one area were it would have maximum environmental impact. We decided to leave the organisers to take care of their own mess. ”
“I’ve no respect left for Murray Kingi. He told the Nelson Mail that I had only been paid half my fee because the job was incomplete. This is a blatant lie. To this day myself and other recyclers have received no payment from the Gathering, and if Kingi expected my crew to co-operate with his negligent environmental and ethical standards he’s way out of touch with reality. “
