As part of ongoing road maintenance, Transit New Zealand will be closing the Newmarket Viaduct for resealing from 8.00pm
on Monday 4 March until 5.30am on Tuesday 5 March. This will be the first of a number of southbound closures during
March. All will be at night in order to minimise disruption to motorists.
Motorists should check the New Zealand Herald, local community newspapers and radio for exact dates. Bad weather will
result in work being postponed to the next suitable night.
On Monday 4 March from 8.00pm to 10.00pm, only one lane will be operating on the southbound side of the viaduct. Transit
needs to close two lanes in the early evening to allow contractors to commence noisy milling operations early so as to
allow this work to be complete by 11.00pm. From 10.30pm to 5.30am on Tuesday 5 March, all three southbound lanes across
the viaduct will be closed to motorists.
During the closures motorists will be required to use a clearly marked detour from the Gillies Ave off ramp, turning
right along Gillies Ave, left into Owens Rd, left into Broadway, and then right into St Marks Rd before turning back
onto the Southern Motorway via the St Marks’s on-ramp.
In the event of bad weather, the closures will be held on the next suitable night.
The Newmarket Viaduct carries more motorway traffic than any other structure in New Zealand. Each day some 160,000 to
170,000 vehicles cross the viaduct in both directions and regular maintenance is necessary to keep it functioning
efficiently.
The new light coloured seal will provide a smoother ride, lower noise levels and reduce the amount of debris. It will
also provide additional structural benefits to the viaduct.
Transit thanks motorists in advance for their co-operation.
