Media Release From Family Court Consumers

Published: Wed 18 Jul 2001 03:20 PM
Family court consumers formed in August 1992. We continue to provide a wide range of services that support people who have entered the Family Court system.
Joanne Neilson spokesperson for Family Court Consumers (F.C.C.) believes that very few parties benefit from the current adversarial, non-inquisitorial Family Court system, particularly children whose best interests are meant to be paramount.
F.C.C. are well aware that men's groups and representatives such as Greg Hallet are promoting the view very strenuously that men are "victims" of mothers and the Family Court. His claims about men being demonised and driven to crime, social problems and suicide by Family Court decisions needs to be substantiated by competent research.
Fathering organisations have gained the attention of the Family Court with widespread political and media action and patronage at the highest level. The Family Court as a result has gone to even greater pains to see that men are heard. Family Court procedures make claims of men being disadvantaged within the system ludicrous. F.C.C. is concerned that the focus on men's perceived inequalities can substantially disadvantage the future of vulnerable children.
Joanne Neilson calls for a move away from such extravagant claims. The focus needs to be on the children not adults who do not take responsibility for their lack of parental skills.
