Anxiety Awareness Appeal Week 4th - 10th June 2001
Introduction:
This is the Phobic Trust’s inaugural appeal week. Its focus is Anxiety Awareness. Anxiety disorders affect up to 18% of
New Zealand’s population at any one time. It is literally the “biggest mental health issue facing the world today”-
World Health Organisation 1999. The Phobic Trust has been established for 18 years and has a professional clinic running
in Auckland (St Lukes) and has recently opened a clinic in Wellington. The Auckland clinic employs 2 full-time
psychologists, 3 part-time psychiatrists, a needs assessment/education counsellor, a clinic manager and 3 administration
staff. The clinic operates a 24-hour voluntary support phone line and runs group therapy sessions as well as one to one
counselling and psychiatric assessments.
Objective of Appeal Week:
- Awareness of these disorders/illnesses via campaign “x’ factor “the pain behind the family.’
- Raising donations towards the $2.2 million budget required for the new respite unit behind the clinic at St Lukes.
- To assist in decreasing the national unemployment figures, the current suicide rates, alcohol and substance abuse and
school avoidance (to name but a few).
- The contribution these disorders/illnesses make to youth suicide.
- Exposure of the 0800 support line.
- Exposure of the web site address.
- To build new commercial partnerships enroute.

- New Zealand Army personnel assisted by Auckland High School students will be collecting donations between 11.30am and
1.30pm in selected areas from Manukau City through to Whangarei on Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th June.
