New Motorway Lane Open For Easter Traffic

Published: Thu 12 Apr 2001 03:42 PM
Transit New Zealand advises that a new motorway lane, immediately south of the Shelly Beach Road offramp, will be open for traffic in time for the Easter weekend.
This provides an additional southbound lane from the Auckland Harbour Bridge from Thursday midday (12 April 2001).
The lane will remain open after Easter, under temporary traffic control. After the holiday, the lane will only operate outside the hours of 6.30 and 9.30 am during weekdays. This means it will be closed between 6.30 and 9.30 am weekdays.
In June, new changeable message signs will be installed on the AHB indicating when the lane will be open. When these signs are in place, the new lane under Shelly Beach Bridge will be restricted to buses only in the morning peak. The additional lane will alleviate congestion to the city in the afternoon peak when the full three lanes will be available under controlled conditions.
Drivers are urged to take great care when merging from the new lane where it ends along St Mary’s Bay.
