The festive season is a time to enjoy yourself, but it's important to remember the safe sex message, the New Zealand
Medical Association says.
"The Christmas-New Year break is a time of festivities, parties and holidays. Enjoy yourself, but be careful," says NZMA
Chairman Dr Pippa MacKay. "The last thing you want to end up with is an unwanted pregnancy or a sexually transmitted
disease."
Summer holidays and parties are a time when people may drink excessively and behave in ways that are out of character.
"Look after your mates, and don't let anyone get pressured into having sex if they are drunk and do not know what they
are doing," Dr MacKay said.
"For those people who choose to have sex, make sure you use reliable contraception. Condoms are particularly useful,
especially with the increase in some types of sexually transmitted diseases, such as chlamydia."
Dr MacKay said women who take oral contraceptives should remember to take their pills away with them on holiday. "If you
forget, then don't take a chance, go and see a doctor and get another prescription.
"Make this festive season one of good memories, not of regrets."
