Vehicle registration statistics for June show a reduction in the total number of registrations processed, compared to June 1999.
Figures released today by the Land Transport Safety Authority show that a total of 20,201 registrations were processed during June, down 6.8 per cent compared with June 1999 (21,575).
While commercial vehicles registrations increased by 9.3 per cent to 2,020 (including used imports) over June last year, car registrations of 14,889 (including used imports) showed a decrease of 7.36 per cent for the same period.
During June 2000, a total of 6,203 cars and commercial vehicles were registered as ‘new’ compared to 5,922 in June of last year.
Of the 4,801 new cars registered, Toyota led with 735 cars, (15.3 per cent market share) followed closely by Holden, increasing its market share with 732 cars (15.25 per cent). Ford in third place recorded 592 (12.3 per cent) followed by Honda with 444 (9.25 per cent).
Of the 1,402 new commercial vehicles registered, Toyota led the way with 387 (27.6%) followed by Ford with 255 (18.19%) and Mitsubishi with 190 (13.55%).
The Holden Commodore continues to lead as the most popular new car with 352 registered during June. The leading commercial vehicle was the Toyota Hilux with 256 registered.
Statistics for the first six months of the year show that new car and commercial vehicles registered have increased, compared to the first six months of last year.
New car registrations at 28,557 show a 3.6 per cent increase for the first half of the year, compared to the same period last year. However, this represents a significant slow down from the 8.8 per cent increase reflected at the end of the March 2000 quarter.
New commercial vehicles (including light and heavy trucks, goods vans, utilities and buses) have had a 20.4 per cent increase from 6,539 to 7,871 registrations for the same period.
However the number of used imported cars registered in the first half of the year has slipped to 61,234 from 63,957 in the same period last year.
This is also reflected in the total volume of vehicle registrations being down by 0.7 per cent to 101,316 for the first half of this year. There were 102,025 total vehicle registrations in the same period last year.
