TV2 is in the process of reviewing its children's programming strategy, looking at how New Zealand's most popular
channel with younger and family viewers can cater even better to its younger audiences.
TV2 General Manager, Stephen Smith says "TV2 is the home of young people's viewing on free to air television in New
Zealand, and therefore it is critical that we provide a comprehensive selection of programming in all important genres."
"TV2 must have a presence in drama, comedy, entertainment, and in factual programming, recognising the need to ensure
that this programming is relevant and meaningful to young people in New Zealand in the new millennium."
"In a world where young people will be increasingly exposed to ever more foreign produced programming, we must ensure
that the New Zealand voice stands out clearly," he says.
Therefore the review will look at more than just the next year, and cover at least the next three years, says Stephen
Smith.
TV2 will be approaching the independent production community seeking creative and exciting new ideas for children's
programming. It currently has a new children's drama already on the drawing boards awaiting funding.
"We especially hope that New Zealand on Air, which funds most children's productions through the taxpayer's
contribution, will join with us in supporting this initiative which we believe will result in more local children's
programming on New Zealand's most watched network for young viewers."
