All Health Reporters/Chief Executives/Press Officers
FROM: Dr Pippa MacKay, NZMA Chairman
DATE: 22 May, 2000
SUBJECT: NZMA condemns doctor's actions
The New Zealand Medical Association absolutely condemns the actions of Christchurch GP Morgan Fahey in sexually offending against women who trusted him as their doctor.
"His guilty pleas today have spared the women from having to relive their experiences by giving evidence," NZMA Chairman Dr Pippa MacKay said.
"It seems amazing that it has taken 35 years for the truth to come out. This, no doubt, is due to his high standing in the community, his position of trust as a family doctor, and to changing attitudes about sexual abuse."
Dr MacKay said women should be aware that they are entitled to have a chaperone of their choice with them for intimate examinations by their doctor.
Under the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers' Rights, all people have extensive rights when seeking health treatment, including the specific right to be free from sexual exploitation.
Dr Fahey's registration to practise as a doctor has been suspended by the Medical Practitioners Disciplinary Tribunal, pending the outcome of a disciplinary hearing.
