SUBJECT: New NZMA Board Members Elected
Three new members have been elected to the New Zealand Medical Association Board following a postal ballot of members
last month.
The new members are:
* Ross Boswell, an Auckland physician.
* John Boyd, a Christchurch general practitioner.
* Karen Wood, a Lower Hutt pathologist.
They join existing Board members Tricia Briscoe (a Rotorua GP and IPA chairperson) and Sylvia Rosevear (an Auckland
obstetrician and gynaecologist), who were re-elected. GP Council Chairman Philip Rushmer (an Auckland GP) and
Specialists' Committee Chairman Deborah Greig (an Auckland dermatologist) are also members of the Board.
NZMA Chairman Pippa MacKay (a Christchurch GP) and Deputy Chairman John Adams (a Dunedin psychiatrist) were re-elected
unopposed. Long-time NZMA Board member Peter Dukes, a Wellington obstetrician and gynaecologist, has now retired from
the Board.
Dr Boswell graduated from Auckland Medical School. After working in the UK, he returned to New Zealand and now practises
at Middlemore Hospital as a chemical pathologist and physician. He is Director of Physician Training at Middlemore for
the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
Dr Boyd, now in group practice in Linwood, graduated from Otago Medical School. He worked in Auckland for 10 years as a
GP and in rural practice in Otago for four years.
Dr Wood graduated from Otago Medical School and practises for Valley Diagnostic Laboratories, and Hutt Valley Health.
She has a particular interest in cervical screening.
New President for NZMA
Prominent Christchurch ophthalmologist Roy Holmes has been elected as the NZMA's new President. Dr Holmes is Secretary
of the Canterbury division of the NZMA, and his involvement with the NZMA stretches back to the early 1960s. He is
currently a member of the Health Funding Authority's Ethics Committee and of the University of Canterbury Council. He is
a past president of the Ophthalmological Society of New Zealand.
