Rape Crisis And Ihc Produce Sexual Abuse Resource
Rape Crisis and IHC have developed new information on sexual abuse for people with an intellectual disability.
"We know that people with an intellectual disability are particularly vulnerable to sexual abuse - research in the United States shows that 83 percent of women with disabilities will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime - yet we found there were no resources available for them," say Janine Stewart, Director of Advocacy IHC and Claire Benson, National Spokeswoman for Rape Crisis.
"We're extremely grateful to the Richmond Foundation and the Rehabilitation Welfare Trust for sponsoring these guides. Without their support we could not have produced them".
The two pamphlets were developed by Jane Brooke, an ACC approved counsellor who worked as an advocate for IHC, after extensive consultation with people with an intellectual disability and staff from IHC, Rape Crisis and ACC.
The first guide is designed for people with an intellectual disability and defines rape and sexual abuse and how to get help. The second guide has been developed for counsellors supporting people with an intellectual disability who have been sexually abused.
The pamphlets will be made available nationwide to counsellors and to service providers for people with an intellectual disability.
