“Children have the right to safely access and participate in the media” said Commissioner for Children, Roger McClay, at
the Children’s Rights in the Media forum in Wellington this afternoon.
Speaking to an audience of advertisers, television producers, journalists, health and education professionals and child
welfare experts, Mr McClay urged media decision-makers to give the rights of children higher priority.
“Privacy, dignity, identity, decency, justice and fairness are the absolute rights which our children are entitled to
under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. Yet all too often they are disregarded by adults.”
“It is of vital importance that children’s rights are not trampled on in the rush to produce a good story.”
