Canterbury University - 33% fee increase temporary - Vice Chancellor
University of Canterbury Vice-Chancellor, Professor Daryl Le Grew, promised during the University Council meeting yesterday that fees would be reduced with a change of government.
Students believe that this explains the spurious reasons put forward for the fee hike. "We believe that the Council took a gamble on a change of government, and risked the considerable wrath of the student body" said representatives of the Registry occupation.
The University of Canterbury decided a 10% operating surplus was necessary and that raising money from students was the right decision.
Coucillors, however, admitted frequently during the meeting that there was not enough evidence to judge the effects of the fee hike on current and prospective students.
Students were appalled that the only research into the change was financial, and that this demonstrated a move away from the provisions of the Education Act.
Absolutely no evidence was presented as to the impact on enrolments, quality of education and access to education for disadvantaged groups.
"We look forward to a post-election fees drop from the University Council and will not be satisfied if this does not happen. The student body is keen to work with the Council to lobby for the change of education policy that they have now staked their reputation on."
