Strong Growth in Number of Secondary Teacher Trainees
The Ministry of Education says its efforts to get more New Zealanders to set their sights on secondary teaching as a
career are working well.
The Ministry says 1,775 people were enrolled last year as secondary trainees, more than double the number enrolled in
1992.
By March, this year's enrolments already totalled 1,779 with a further intake still to be added.
Secondary teacher training is now available in areas such as Wairarapa, Northland and Bay of Plenty, making it more
accessible to people who previously had to go to the main centres to train.
The demand for more secondary teachers is growing because an increasing number of children are now moving through from
primary to secondary school.
The emphasis now was on getting the maximum number of New Zealand trained secondary teachers available, the Ministry
said.
Secondary rolls across the country will increase by 6,000 next year. Ministry projections indicate that when they peak
in the period between 2005 and 2007, the number of secondary students will have grown by 37,600. The strongest roll
growth will be north of Taupo, particularly in the Auckland region.
