Indications that the government will next week announce scholarships for postgraduate students of science and technology
has been met with anger by students.
"The decrease in science students is a clear result of the user-pays education system and a lack of financial support
for students. Students choices are now based more on their financial situation rather than educational need." said Karen
Skinner Co-President of the New Zealand University Students Association
"If the government wants to have more students entering into science subjects, then they first need to introduce a
universal living allowance, and cut fees. Otherwise all they are doing is tinkering in response to the most immediate
problem, without dealing with the real issues.
"Science courses are known to have a high level of contact hours. It is hard for students to complete their course as
well as holding down a part-time job - which is now a reality of being a student.
"National has clearly shown time and time again that they do not have the ability to understand the needs of students,
the tertiary sector or society. Now they are planning to dictate to students what they should be studying.
"If Max Bradford would stop being so arrogant and start dealing with the real issues, then students and society would be
a lot better off" concluded Ms Skinner.
