Sensible drinking age shows Parliament trusts young people
“Making the drinking age a blanket 18, requiring proof of age, and demanding strict enforcement shows Parliament trusts young people”, University of Canterbury President Darel Hall said this evening.
“Students are required to make important decisions regarding student debt and voting. Most students will be happy that they will now be treated as adults in this respect. Now if only means testing didnít treat students as dependants until they are 25 . . . “
“This law change means that our 18 and 19 year old students, and especially the Halls of Residence students, can consume alcohol in a licensed, controlled environment where host responsibility is practised. In the past they have been forced into private, uncontrolled drinking environments where host responsibility practices have not been well understood and implemented.”
