Since the release in December 2018 of the report by the Tomorrow’s Schools Independent Taskforce, Our Schooling Futures: Stronger Together | Whiria Ngā Tūātinitini, there has been robust discussion about our current schooling system.
“With consultation closing 7 April 2019, now is the time to put pen to paper and have your say on the reports’
recommendations,” says Bali Haque, Chair of the Independent Taskforce.
The Taskforce has hosted or attended more than 100 meetings with parents, board members, teachers and principals to
ensure all New Zealanders can hear about the proposals and share their views.
“These consultation meetings have been really valuable. They have provided us with plenty to think about as we prepare
our final report, and to respond to any questions that people have had about our recommendations,” Bali Haque says
“It is important that people are clear about what we are proposing and why. For example, we really want to encourage
more parents to be actively involved in their school boards and this is why we recommend the boards’ focus be on student
success and wellbeing, the goals, culture, and character of the school, and on appointing the principal.
We also want to provide more support and time for teachers and principals to get on with the vitally important tasks we
ask them to do and to clear away some of the bureaucracies that currently get in the way.”
The Taskforce has prepared six video’s focusing on some questions people have about the recommendations including the
role of boards, Education Hubs and principals’ contracts. You can view these here.

the public and educators about what they want from our schooling system,” Bali Haque says.
