Southland Interschools Speech Contest Grand Final
The best young speech-makers in the region go head to head on Friday September 14 at Otama Hall to decide the winners of
the annual Southland Interschools Speech Contest.
55 Southland schools were involved in the event which has been a feature on the Southern academic calendar since 2003.
During the contest students from Year Five to Year Eight are assessed on their speech making and delivery. In order to
reach the Grand Final, students have placed highly within their schools, within clusters of schools, and within one of
three area finals.
This year’s contest, formerly delivered by Venture Southland, has been convened by Otama School, Gore, after new
principal Samuel Smith was keen to see the contest continue.
“Speaking is an important part of participating in society, and the ability to compose and deliver speeches is so
beneficial for our children. I am pleased that I had the support of the Otama School community in keeping this fantastic
contest going. I am looking forward to seeing the talent on Friday, and I’m certain it will be a challenge for our three
judges to decide who will be taking home the trophies!”
The featured 22 students will be articulating their thoughts and opinions on everything from inspiration to M. Bovis to
farts.
Grand Final judges are: Luke Howden (Hokonui Radio), Angela Newell (Venture Southland), and Hamish Walker (National
Party Electorate MP for Clutha-Southland).
