She Can Code champions diversity in tech industry

Published: Tue 15 May 2018 09:37 AM
Code Club Aotearoa have been bowled over by the interest in their event, She Can Code. The online event celebrates the 125th anniversary of women’s suffrage in Aotearoa by recognising the girls, women, and other marginalised gender people who write much of our inventive code.
“The tech industry should be for everyone,” says Code Club’s General Manager, Michael Trengrove. “Our aim is to get as many girls, women and other marginalised gender people coding as possible, whether they are experienced coders or just want to give our beginner projects a go.”
Code Club will also be sharing stories from some of Aotearoa’s amazing coders, and running a competition where Code Clubs, community groups and schools can win one of two twelve packs of Sphero SPRK+s.
Code Club Aotearoa started from a small computer lab in Aranui, Christchurch in 2014. Now it’s a nationwide network of free, volunteer-led coding clubs for children age 9-13. “Support for the event has been overwhelming,” says Trengrove. “And it’s easy to take part – if you code during 19 - 27 May just add your location to our map of Aotearoa. Help us make girls, women and other marginalised gender coders more visible.”
The event will be held 19 - 27 May at codeclub.nz/she-can-code
