Innovations in tertiary - Ara showcases developments
The state-of-the-art new Kahukura building on Moorhouse Avenue, the inviting North Green space, new programmes and more
innovative ways to deliver industry-relevant, vocational tertiary training to different types of learners - 2017 was a
big year for Ara Institute of Canterbury.
Tertiary education must respond to changing demands of learners, Ara Chief Executive Tony Gray says, and the recent
upgrades at the City Campus reflects that imperative. “We are very proud of our new facilities, such as the Kahukura,
but we are just as proud of the work we’ve done to create flexible learning pathways to accommodate all types of
learners.
The Twilight Open Campus on Thursday 25 January, 4pm – 7pm, is a chance for the community to check out new developments
at the City Campus Christchurch, and enjoy live music, food trucks and entertainment from Highly Flammable performers. Tutors will be on hand to talk about new facilities, the range of programmes on offer and employment
opportunities.
“Whether you are a parent returning to study to pursue a new career, a young person who has left secondary school to
start their studies or a professional wanting to upskill, you can find programmes and learning delivery options to get
you to where you want to go,” Gray said.
‘Blended delivery’ is the hallmark of modern study options, meaning a combination of part-time, face to face, online and
workplace study options to suit different people and prepare them for the industry they will work in.
“We know from our industry partners that the nature of work is changing but that being able to communicate, collaborate
and think creatively is more important than ever; along with having the key skills for particular roles. Our mission is
to prepare graduates for the realities of work and to meet the expectations of employers and we do that through
innovative learning options that combine theory with practice, and industry skills with soft skills.”
