Samuel Marsden Collegiate School opens makerspace and
announces participation in the 21C Skills Lab Trailblazer Project
Samuel Marsden Collegiate School officially opened its makerspace, named ‘Waihanga’ this week. Waihanga conveys the spirit of the space: to make, build, construct, erect, create, develop, generate. The evening had students demonstrating the many ways in which they are learning to work creatively with technology. Students had drones buzzing around the school foyer, robots being driven and built, a musical staircase being made, art and technology being incorporated into projects and use being made of the 3D printer, laser cutter, electronics, craft and hardware tools, and the Lego wall.
“We are indebted to the Marsden Parents’ Association for their support in funding this exciting learning space where our students can work collaboratively and independently on challenging projects of their own devising,” says Acting Principal Margaret Adeane.
Ms Adeane also spoke about the learning going on at Marsden to prepare girls for the world beyond school and announced Marsden’s participation in the 21C Skills Lab’s Trailblazer project where the focus will be on developing students’ non-cognitive skills. These skills have been identified as essential for entering the workforce today. Marsden is thrilled to be the only Wellington school participating in this exciting project.
Justine Munro is the Co-Founder and Director of the 21C Skills Lab, described by NBR as the latest disrupter in the education sector. 21C Skills Lab states ‘In a world where technical skills are constantly changing and individual knowledge is far less valuable, these [non-cognitive] broad how to skills are critical.’
Samuel Marsden Collegiate School has been providing quality independent education for more than 135 years. Today it has two campuses. The Marsden School Karori campus provides Preschool education for boys and girls, and education for girls from Years 1 to 13. Marsden Whitby provides education for boys and girls Years 7 – 13. As a not-for-profit organisation Marsden School expresses its vision in terms of what it ultimately wants to achieve for its students. That is to lay the foundation for lives of meaning, accomplishment and happiness, in a rapidly changing world. marsden.school.nz
