Te Reo-Speaking Parents Likely to Enrol Kids in Māori Ed

Te reo-speaking parents are more likely to enrol children in kaupapa Māori education
Almost half of all Māori parents who speak te reo at home are likely to enrol their child in kaupapa Māori education, Stats NZ said today.
"This is positive news and shows the importance of te reo and culture in influencing a parent’s decision on educational pathways," Stats NZ Kaihautu Rhonda Paku says.
The new report’s findings support the view that parents’ cultural characteristics – using te reo, and being connected to and valuing Māori culture – are important in their choice of schooling for their children.
Parents more likely to enrol children in kaupapa Māori education uses data from Te Kupenga 2013 to look at the characteristics of Māori parents who sent their children to kaupapa Māori education.
"We hope the release of this report will encourage researchers to delve deeper into its findings, and the Te Kupenga dataset," Ms Paku says.
Te Kupenga 2013 was Stats NZ’s first survey of Māori well-being. The survey will run again in 2018, with collection starting mid-year.
