Positive Behaviour conference reinforces winning approach
Judge Andrew Becroft the new Children’s Commissioner, Minister of Education Hon. Hekia Parata and international experts in positive behavioural interventions and support will all address the 5th annual Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) School-Wide Conference in Wellington.
The PB4L approach is not about changing the students; its focus is on changing the environment, systems and practices that schools use to support them to make positive behaviour choices.
PB4L School-Wide aims to help New Zealand schools build a culture where positive behaviour and learning is a way of life. The framework can be tailored to schools’ own environment and cultural needs.
PB4L School-Wide is based on the Positive Behavioural Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework developed at the University of Oregon in the 1990s. PBIS is now in thousands of schools across the US.
In 2013 an evaluation of PB4L School-Wide implementation showed positive results including:
-Decreased stand-down rates
-More young people staying in school
-Retention rates for 17 year olds increasing to 74% in 2011
-On average an additional twelve 15 year olds achieved NCEA Level 1 in each secondary school implementing PB4L
There are now over 600 School-Wide schools in New Zealand.
