University of Auckland retains number one ranking
The University of Auckland has again been ranked as the leading university in New Zealand following the publication of the 2014 QS World University Rankings.
The University of Auckland has again been ranked as the leading university in New Zealand following the publication of the 2014 QS World University Rankings.
In the latest rankings, the University’s position improved slightly to 92 compared to 94 in 2013.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Stuart McCutcheon says: “The ranking is a continued endorsement of the University’s pre-eminent status as the leading New Zealand research-intensive university - one-third of the country’s A-ranked researchers in the entire tertiary sector are at this University and the rankings reflect that.”
The University of Auckland is the only New Zealand university ranked in the top 100 in the QS World University Rankings, in the top 200 in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and with the maximum rating of Five Stars Plus in the QS Stars University Rankings. The University is also the highest-ranked New Zealand university in the Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities.
In the QS 2014 rankings Waikato held its position at 401-410 and Lincoln improved to 411-420, however the remaining universities were on a downward trend.
“We are pleased to have retained our position in the top 100,” Professor McCutcheon says. “However, the overall trend is one of a continuing decline in rankings among New Zealand universities, reflecting the low per student investment by international standards in university education and research in this country.
“This is very disappointing, and it runs the risk of negatively impacting our ability to attract international students who are now critical to the financial viability of universities as well as enhancing the international experiences of our own domestic students.”
Other New Zealand universities ranked in the QS World University Rankings are: Otago 159; Canterbury 242; Victoria 275; Massey 346; Waikato 401-410; Lincoln 411-420; and AUT 501-550.
