Wellington Protest Rally to March for Palestine
15 August 2014
Protesters against the Israeli attacks on Gaza say the conflict is not resolved and plan another march this Saturday. This time to include a protest outside the Ministry for Foreign Affairs headquarters on Lampton Quay.
Wellington Students for Justice in Palestine say more is required than sporadic ceasefires and peace talks to stop the carnage and siege.
Spokesperson Dougal McNeill says it is now clear that all the mainstream New Zealand political parties are critical of the Israeli slaughter of civilians in Gaza, but advantage needs to be taken on the current world attention to drive home reality to the Israeli government.
“People are saying that it’s unacceptable for Israel to maintain its now seven year stranglehold on Gaza and expect peace. But that message has to be driven home to the Israeli government. Our politicians should translate their anger at Israeli actions into more vigorous protest that has some bite. We need to send the Israeli ambassador packing. We need to end the visa waiver for Israelis to enter New Zealand. The Superannuation Fund needs to pull out of investing in companies which make the bombs for Israel and the Israeli companies which profit from the continuing occupation,” Dougal McNeill says.
“We are also protesting at the MFAT headquarters in Wellington. In part we want to recognise they have called in the Israeli ambassador to reprimand him for Israeli atrocities, but again they are not doing enough for the Israeli government to take any notice."
