Student-designed App aims to get people together in the real world

students together in person rather than online.
A University of Auckland Computer Science student and a friend working in the tech industry have designed an App to get
students together in person rather than online.
Called BoredCast, the App has been accepted by Apple’s App Store and was designed by third-year computer science student
Tom Sammons, 20, and App developer Avario Babushka, 20.
Tom, who is in the third year of a Bachelor of Science degree studying Computer Science, says the idea came from
realising that it was difficult to get a group of mates together without spending a lot of time trying to contact
everyone through texting.
“We really believe that the way things are going, we’re spending all our time on Facebook and twitter but not actually
spending a lot of time together,” Tom says. “So we wanted to create something that would allow people to connect in the
real world easily and simply.”
BoredCast works along similar lines to SnapChat where data is automatically deleted rather than being stored. Users
connect to the App through Facebook and create a “cast” – a short-lived, casual event such as lunch between lectures.
Users can easily and simply create a list of who they want to invite and can limit the invite to their current location.
“BoredCast is not a social network,” Tom says. “It serves just one purpose and that is to bring people together in the
real world, connect friends and even maybe meet new people. There are no profile pages and no permanent records.”
The App is free to download for both iPhone and Android and has no advertising.
“So far the response has been really good and we’ve had really positive feedback from users,” Tom says. “It’s doing what
it was designed to do really well and we’re quickly gaining users. The more people that are on it, the more useful it
becomes.”
