New teacher’s handbook emphasizes written language skills
Author Aunty Alice offers reliable assessment for successful literary acquisition
RAGLAN, New Zealand – The latest textbook from author Aunty Alice, “Teaching a Child to Read and Write Well” (published by Trafford Singapore), is a helpful tool for school teachers instructing young children in language arts.
Aunty Alice’s approach is two-pronged: “Instead of the clumsy and poorly integrated literacy themes identified in most school literary curriculums (oral and written language, reading, spelling and presenting), she reduced it to these two: listening and speaking.”
According to Aunty Alice, written expression is akin to using a code to speak. She says mastering the code involves not only mastering letter-sound relationships, but also mastering spelling, vocabulary, punctuation and contractions, among other grammatical skills.
“Quality in writing will develop as a natural outcome from listening to (or reading) great models of writing, and understanding what the words mean in context,” Aunty Alice says.
The author says this new guide will demonstrate to school teachers how to assess literacy readiness at all levels and help students reach their full language potential.
“It is a simple, logical approach that is rooted in how humans evolved as thinking beings,” Aunty Alice says. “Infants are ready to listen and speak from before birth, having hearing already established and the language centers of the brain fully developed at birth. I use this knowledge to put forward a completely new approach that uses this organic phenomenon to its fullest potential.”
