Polytechnic Backs Phoenix Plan

The Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) today confirmed its support for the stadium in its initial planning stages at the Petone Recreation Ground.
Council Chair Roger Sowry advised WelTec had been approached to provide in principle support of the Phoenix’s plans to make the Petone Recreation Ground its home base.
“The plans show a fantastic new facility right outside our Petone campus. We are very supportive of this initiative which will be great for WelTec given the alignment with our exercise science programmes and the Tamaiti Whangai Sports Academy which are run from our campus and gymnasium,” said Mr Sowry.
“We have received a briefing from Dr Morgan and the Community Facilities Trust (CFT) on the proposal and we have endorsed the concept. This development would bring a whole new dimension to campus life for our students and there would be numerous benefits and opportunities arising from sports and other events being held right next door to our campus.
“Our hospitality students for example could get involved in the catering, our event management students could assist with planning sports tournaments and matches, our sports students will see top athletes in action and connecting with their coaches will potentially provide opportunities for our students to pathway into high performance coaching.
“A plaza is planned for outside our main Petone entrance and this will greatly enhance the student and community environment making it a more vibrant place to be. There are a lot of
synergies that we will continue to explore with Phoenix and the CFT,” said Mr Sowry.
