National Summer Fiction School at Waterfront Writing Centre
A writing school for aspiring novelists runs next week on the Auckland waterfront. This is the fourth year the popular
3-day Creative Hub Summer Fiction School has run, and the course has its own unique atmosphere in a spectacular
waterfront location on Princes Wharf. The course runs from 10am to 4pm on 10,11,12th January.
The Summer Fiction school teaches the basic writing techniques used by professionals, such as creating memorable scenes,
transforming life experiences into fiction, choosing the right point of view, and writing great dialogue. What is the
Hero's Journey? What is Show, Don't Tell? What is the best way to end a story?
The course offers a supportive group environment in which students can explore their writing ideas and connect to other
aspiring writers. Students may have dabbled a bit already, be writing a novel, or might simply want to learn how to
start. The Summer Fiction School is tutored by John Cranna.
John is the winner of the Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best First Book, and the NZ Book Award for Fiction. His fiction
titles have been published in NZ, Australia, UK and in France. He was voted Best Post-Graduate teacher by students at
AUT University in 2008.
