‘Pirate Academy’ – Pirates are Sailors too!
Ahoy me hearties! It’s all aboard at Voyager New Zealand Maritime Museum for the July School Holiday Programme – ‘Pirate
Academy’ – Pirates are Sailors too! Children who attend ‘Pirate Academy’ will learn the skills of a sailor, because
Pirates are Sailors too. The programme will run from Monday 15 July – Sunday 28 July, 9.30am to 3.30pm daily and is
designed for children aged 5 -12 years. The programme offers the ideal balance of tons of fun and good challenging
physical tasks while at the same time learning the necessary skills and attributes of a sailor/pirate.
During the course of the day they will make their own Pirate Kit Bag and fill it with booty of their own creation – a
good lesson in resourcefulness and self sufficiency. The importance of physical fitness for duty is highlighted at the
Pirate Boot Camp where the kids may exert every ounce of their youthful energy playing such time tested games as
Captain’s Coming. Each of Voyager’s hosts will be dressed as a pirate, will actually represent a pirate character and
will tell the kids swashbuckling pirate tales, not the least being the newly released ‘The Pirate that Couldn’t Swim’ by
Ryan Walters and supported by Voyager NZMM and WaterSafe NZ. So, though they are being entertained they are still
learning the need to be safe and confident around water.
No day at Voyager would be complete without a Treasure Hunt. This time they have to find and collect ‘the 5 lost Pirate
Scrolls’. Each scroll has seafaring facts on one side including navigation, rope tying, water safety and on the other
side a take home activity. They will sew these scrolls into a seafaring fact book. Finally, their photos will be taken
with their book. They have now successfully completed the Pirate Academy. The photos will be posted on Voyager’s Face
Book.
