Exciting prospects for CTC graduates
The Canterbury Tertiary College (CTC) is celebrating the success of over 280 students completing their vocational
training at the CTC Awards Night tomorrow at CPIT. 24 top awards will be presented based on academic and personal
performance.
“I am incredibly proud of these young people for taking the first positive step on their career pathways. They have
created a great foundation for themselves and I have every confidence in their future prospects,” CTC Manager Emma
Meijer says.
CERA’s Simon Worthington will speak at the event, giving insight into the prospects for CTC graduates in Canterbury who
have the skills and opportunity to enter into vital positions in the trades and hospitality sectors.
44% of this year’s CTC graduates will enter full-time employment or apprenticeships in their chosen field with a further
44% continuing CTC or secondary study, or enrolling in full-time tertiary study for 2013. The remainder are yet to make
a decision on their next step.
CTC has also been beneficial for those students who chose not to complete the full programme this year. 96 students of
the total 371 enrolled for 2012 moved into related employment or an appreticeship (33%), returned to secondary school
full-time or entered other tertiary level study (41%), with others leaving the region or seeking employment.
At the event, four of this year’s graduating CTC students will speak about their experiences representing New Zealand in
China at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Youth Fair in August.
“APEC was an exciting and unique opportunity for our students to be involved in an international event, learn about
other cultures and expand their skill base,” CTC Manager Emma Meijer says. “It’s another vote of confidence in the
success of CTC in Christchurch and nationally.”
The awards night will also celebrate the success of a pilot prgramme run this year for students with disabilities and
showcase student work including a ute revamped by automotive engineering students, table-tennis tables and hand-made
metal toolboxes.
The CTC programme provides a unique bridge between secondary and tertiary education. Students are enrolled at their
secondary school, working towards NCEA L2 while also studying an industry based qualification over two years through the
Canterbury Tertiary College. CPIT is the lead provider of CTC programmes in Canterbury with SIT and Linwood College
providing some programmes, all in partnership with the region’s secondary schools.
The CTC Awards Night will be held this Wednesday 28 November from 6pm in CPIT’s Rakaia Atrium at the Madras Street
Campus.
