James Bonifacio is UC’s latest Rhodes Scholar

Christchurch physics and maths student James Bonifacio has become the University of Canterbury’s latest Rhodes Scholar.
Rhodes Scholarships are the pinnacle of achievement for university graduates wishing to pursue postgraduate study at
Oxford University, regarded as one of the world’s leading universities.
A former Hagley Community College student in Christchurch, Bonifacio said he was hugely honoured to win a Rhodes
Scholarship to Oxford.
The University of Canterbury (UC) has had long ties with Oxford and last year Oxford helped UC by offering 42 UC
students an opportunity to study for a term at Oxford.
``I heard great things about Oxford from my friends that went on the UC-Oxford exchange following the earthquakes, so
it's great to have the opportunity to go there next year and see that for myself,’’ Bonifacio said.
``This is a life-changing opportunity. Having a Rhodes Scholarship not only means having the financial support to study
at Oxford, but it also means being involved with an academically diverse community of Rhodes scholars from all over the
world."
``My curiosity and passion for learning drives me to pursue a deeper understanding of nature. At Oxford I am going to
study for a Doctor of Philosophy in theoretical physics and plan to work on cosmology, the study of the universe at
large.
``Career wise, I initially aim to do physics research. Hopefully this will eventually mean working as an academic
physicist in New Zealand, most likely after working overseas. Though I am also interested in science, communication and
education more generally.
``The best part of being at UC has certainly been the people that I’ve met here, including the many that have helped me
during and even before my degree. I value the approachability of my lecturers and the friendliness of everyone that I’ve
met during my time here. I’m also very fond of the many green spaces that we have on campus and the (ephemeral)
sunshine.’’
Bonifacio said he was excited about the opportunities that existed for science to be a part of the Christchurch rebuild.
While overseas he said he would keep a close eye on how Christchurch develops.
He has completed a BSc with a double major in mathematics and physics, and is now in his honours year. He has been
involved in tutoring and mentoring at university and currently volunteers as a tutor at Hagley Community College’s
Refugee Homework Centre. He is also a keen sportsman, enjoying running and competing in taekwondo.
He said that this is an exciting time to be working on cosmological physics since current experiments are teaching us
more about our universe, such as the nature of dark matter and dark energy.
"Modern cosmology is a young, rapidly advancing and observationally informed science, although it also relies on
fundamental theoretical principles. Therefore, advances in cosmology will be made by consideration of both observational
data and fundamental theory.
``The fruitful interplay between theory and observation attracts me to cosmology, where I hope to use theory and
observational data to find solutions to unanswered questions in cosmological physics,’’ he said.
