Dawson School Wins $10,000 In The Fresh ‘N Fruity Get Growing Programme
NEW ZEALAND Monday, 14 December 2009:
Winners of the Fresh ‘n Fruity™ school Get Growing programme have been announced, giving students another reason to be
happy this Christmas.
Room 20 from Dawson School in Otara, Auckland has won $10,000 in the Fresh ‘n Fruity™ national education programme which
encouraged students to grow strawberries over a nine week period. The class was chosen because of the sheer volume of
work and the creativity involved in the students’ entry.
Teacher, Janine Pieterse, says the school plans to use the money to build a kitchen in the school so that students can
learn how to cook healthy, nutritious meals
“We are ecstatic that we won the money. The students put a huge amount of effort into this initiative and it is a great
surprise for us all to end the year on a high,” says Ms Pieterse.
The Fresh ‘n Fruity™ Get Growing programme was designed to get students involved in gardening and learn skills involved
in growing fruit.
Fresh ‘n Fruity™ brand manager, Tania Kilpatrick, is thrilled at the response from the huge numbers of schools that
participated throughout the country.
“We are delighted that the Fresh ‘n Fruity™ Get Growing programme initiative has had such an impact on students’
enthusiasm for growing gardens and learning,” says Ms Kilpatrick.
More than 550 classrooms nationwide took part in the programme. Classrooms submitted growing diaries to gardening guru
Justin Newcombe for judging.
“The outputs from students were incredible and of an extremely high standard. A programme like this should be
implemented into the school curriculum, to get kids enthusiastic about gardening and sustainable practices,” says Mr
Newcombe
The two runner up schools were St Pauls School, Nelson and Room 5, Greenacres School, Wellington whose ingenuity and
creativity helped their class to each win $5,000.
The Fresh ‘n Fruity™ Get Growing initiative was developed as part of the re-branding of Fresh ‘n Fruity™ packaging and
launch of the new Superfruits™ range. Available in both 100g and 150g pot sizes, Fresh ‘n Fruity™ yoghurts are a healthy
snack perfect for kids’ breakfasts and school lunch boxes.
