UNESCO supports Genesis Energy, Realise the Dream Science Week
Some of New Zealand's most exceptional school students who have demonstrated excellence in science research or
technological practice gathered in Wellington thisweek as part of the annual "Genesis Energy Realise the Dream" science
week. During the week the 29 students visited science, technology and educational institutions such as GNS Science,
Island Bay Marine Centre, Massey University Wellington and the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary. Students are then required to
share their work with their communities before returning to Wellington for the Awards Dinner on Monday 9 March, where
cash prizes of up to $7,000 and international travel to countries such as China and the United Kingdom will be
presented. The New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO will award a $4000 prize to the top Year 12 or Year 13 Science
candidate.
"This event helps ensure a bright future for the sciences, mathematics, social sciences and technology in our
communities," says Dr Bryan Gould,
Chair of the New Zealand National Commission for UNESCO.
"We are building upon and promoting the enterprise, inventiveness and excellence of some of New Zealand's youngest
scientists and researchers. This event sits precisely within our goals of promoting education and science."
The twenty-nine finalists were selected for a wide range of research and technology projects including: super-cooled
computers for gaming, touch-screen technologies for household items, the effects of exercise in preventing memory loss,
driver behaviour outside the school gate and weta mating behaviour.
