Whanganui School of Design Graduation
The UCOL Whanganui School of Design graduation this Wednesday 3 December will see 45 newly qualified students ready to
make their mark on the international design industry.
34 students graduate with the Bachelor of Computer Graphic Design, jointly awarded by UCOL’s Whanganui School of Design
and the University of Waikato. Five students will graduate with postgraduate diplomas, two with Honours and four with
Masters.
UCOL Academic Manager of the School of Design, Betsy Berger, says “This year’s moderators, (national and international
designers, and design educators) said the level of work this year was among the best they have seen, and was as fresh
and innovative as they have come to expect from our school.”
The WSD has developed an international reputation, known for its cutting-edge new media and graphic design. Some of the
work is on display in the Flight WSD08 exhibition, featuring the final projects of graduating students.
The exhibition includes original works from all genres of graphic design, including print, video, animation interactive
media, packaging, publication, Web design and 3D modelling. It will be open for viewing at the Matapihi ki te Ao campus
on Rutland Street until the day of graduation, when friends and family will be the last to view the display.
The keynote speaker for the ceremony is Betsy Berger, the new head of the school. Betsy started in her position as
Academic Manager in September. She is an award-winning designer with a 20-year career in advertising and design. Her
work and teaching have taken her to positions around the world, including most recently, as Assistant Professor of Art
and Design at Zayed University, Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates.
