Scholarships for UCOL bright stars
Roseanne Chee is matching her performance as a champion track cyclist with her achievements as a star student at UCOL.
Roseanne has been awarded the Palmerston North City Council Jaycee Trust Scholarship for the second year running, to
support her study for a Bachelor of Human Performance degree.
It is her fourth award since beginning study for the degree in 2006. Last year she received a UCOL High Achievers Award,
for students who show excellence and commitment, and a scholarship from the Graduate Women Manawatu Charitable Trust
earlier this year.
Rosanne is a former New Zealand junior track cyclist who has represented New Zealand at the Oceana and Junior World
Games. She describes herself as “a perfectionist with strong willpower and motivation”.
Two other Human Performance students have also added to already excellent study records. Raewyn Walker received the 2008
Palmerston North Soroptimist Scholarship. Last year she received a UCOL Scholarship for Effort and Achievement.
Bachelor of Human Performance student Johanna Young won two awards this year: a Graduate Women Manawatu award and an
award from the Fletcher Challenge Trust.
Earlier this year she, Raewyn and Roseanne all won awards from the Graduate Women Manawatu Trust to help with their
final year Bachelor of Human Performance study.

In total, eleven students received scholarships at yesterday’s (Thursday) award ceremony at the UCOL campus where award
winning students and scholarship sponsors were welcomed by UCOL Deputy Chief Executive Bonnie Dewart.
The Andrew Cliff Award went to first year Medical Imaging Technology student Boyd Lapwood.
The Colleen McPherson Memorial grant, for a student with a disability, went to Kayla Houghton who is studying for UCOL’s
Diploma in Vet Nursing.
Two Ralph Flavell Memorial Scholarships went to Rachel Haerewa, studying for the Bachelor of Human Performance, and
Margaret Mowat who is on the Bachelor of Nursing programme. Last year Margaret was a recipient of an award from Graduate
Women Manawatu.
Rachel also won the UCOL Scholarship for Effort and Achievement.
The Fletcher Challenge Trust Award went to Bachelor of Human Performance student Johanna Young who received a Graduate
Women Manawatu Charitable Trust award last year.
Naween Premadasa won one of three UCOL High Achievers awards. He is a straight A student on the New Zealand Diploma in
Business programme. A second award went to “innovative self starter” Leilani Hatch who is studying for a Bachelor of
Applied Visual Imaging.
Karyn Jamieson, who is studying from Gisborne for a UCOL Bachelor of Nursing, also won a UCOL High Achievers awards.
