Whitireia student Bill Nelson has won an 'Enderby Trust - Sub-Antarctic Islands Scholarship 2008'. He will travel to the 'Galapagos' of Antarctica from 27 November until 9 December, on board Heritage Expeditions Polar Research vessel Spirit of Enderby.
Nelson is studying for a Diploma in Creative Writing (Advanced) at Whitireia and will use the trip will inspire a number of new poems for him to complete a book of poetry. Nelson's 400 word application was based around the geographic and scientific uniqueness of the sub Antarctic as a unique inspiration for his writing.
The trust provides opportunities for people between 18-30 years to experience the New Zealand bio-geographical region through its association with Heritage Expeditions. At the conclusion of the expedition the successful participants are required to submit a 1000 word essay on a topic of their choice to the Trustees.
"I am thrilled to receive the scholarship, in their reply they said they were excited by my varied background (poetry, geography and science) and the idea of using the trip as inspiration for the book of poetry I am working on" says Nelson.
