APO Education Programme Mixes Orchestra And Hip Hop Beats In School Holidays

September 25, 2008 –Classical music meets hip hop in a pilot programme being run by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and Otara Music and Arts Centre during the school holidays.

Remix the Orchestra is an innovative new music cross-over project designed to bring together the styles of hip hop and orchestral music. The week-long free project begins on Monday 29 September with a group of Maori and Pacific Island secondary school students from the Manukau region.

APO Education Manager Lee Martelli says the group will be working with five APO players and hip-hop specialists including Anonymouz, Living Rhythm and DJ Poroufessor to develop their abilities in music technology, composition and performance while merging the rich instrumentation of classical music and the infectious beats of hip-hop.

“Students will be remixing and composing their own original pieces with the guidance of a professional hip hop mentor and APO musicians,” Ms Martelli says.

The project is part of the APO’s extensive Education Programme and reflects the diversity of the orchestra and its links to the community.

“We are keen to introduce more young people to orchestral music and this project provides an opportunity for students to explore the connections between classical music and hip hop,” Ms Martelli says.

Orchestra Remixed finishes with students performing their work at a free concert in Otara’s Town Centre on Friday 3 October at 4pm and students go home with a recording of their work.
