UCOL students and staff will once again represent Wanganui on the catwalk at the finals of the prestigious Westfield Style Pasifika New Zealand fashion awards in Auckland on 5 September.
Last year, Whanganui UCOL Bachelor of Fashion student Juliet Newton won the Asia Pasifika category. This year two students as well as a lecturer have had entries accepted into the final show in competition against entries from around Australasia and the Pacific.
Westfield Style Pasifika is the largest and most innovative indigenous fashion show of its type in the world. The show has a live audience of thousands as well as its television broadcast. It is held each year in the form of a fashion, awards and entertainment spectacular at New Zealand’s largest indoor venue, the Vector Arena.
Whanganui UCOL Acting Head of the School of Fashion, Cassandra Knight says that having entries accepted into the national show is a significant mark of success.
“Once again Whanganui UCOL Bachelor of Fashion students and staff have excelled by gaining entry. It gives them the opportunity to showcase their work to a huge audience.”
Second year Bachelor of Fashion student Michelle Smith’s design has been accepted into the Pasifika Men’s Wear section, and Alice Walter, also in her second year has her designs in the Parent and Child section.
Whanganui UCOL Fashion Construction lecturer Sue Walker has had two entries accepted. Her pieces will be in the Three Piece Collection: Garments for the Day, and the Traditionally Inspired section.
