Living books speak volumes
A collection of living library books will be available for loan to students and staff this Wednesday and Friday at the Whanganui UCOL library.
The living books are people with expertise in selected fields. They can be reserved for 15 minutes at a time, so students and staff can benefit from the ‘books’ experiences and wisdom.
Whanganui UCOL Campus Librarian, Coral Hanna says that while similar events will be taking place around New Zealand for Library Week, this is totally unique for Wanganui, and has never been done here before.
“They are interactive ‘books’, they take a variety of different formats – some will be doing presentations, some will be chatting and answering questions, some will be demonstrating examples of their work.”
Coral says there was a great response to their request for the living books, and a fantastic range will be on offer. Staff, as well as successful alumni, will participate. She says the ‘books’ are not expected to gather any dust, with a bookings sheet already filling up.
Categories available include fashion, information technology, fitness and nutrition, Maori art, library and information studies, nursing and a recent youth perspective edition.
The library has distributed information to students and staff with conditions for loans, including not removing the books from the library and not spilling any food or drink on them.
