Celebration For Trainees And Apprentices
Trainees and apprentices will be celebrating their achievements at the
Nelson Regional Industry Training Graduation next Monday.
Graduation Coordinator, Tim Wanklyn says it¹s an opportunity for families,
friends, employers and trainers to mark the success of industry trainees and
apprentices who have achieved their qualifications over the last year.
³Graduates deserve the chance to share their success with their supporters,²
he says. ³It¹s great to see them stand up and take a bow alongside their
fellow industry achievers.²
Graduations are a Mayors¹ Taskforce for Jobs event and are hosted by the
district¹s mayors and Industry Training Organisations, with support from
Work & Income and coordination by the Nelson Regional EDA.
Tasman District Council Mayor, Richard Kempthorne says it¹s important to
acknowledge the work that goes into training: ³Helping young people into
meaningful employment is a priority of the Mayors¹ Taskforce for Jobs and we
recognise the importance of on-the-job training for people of all ages. I
commend the region¹s employers for assisting employees in their training and
for demonstrating the value they place on their staff,² he says.
Nelson City Council Mayor Kerry Marshall shares this view, and says the
contribution of local industries to training is huge: ³Our region has a
shortage of people to fill highly skilled jobs and training is vital. The
graduation is one way we can show our support to the students and their
employers for investing in training.²
The graduation is at the Annesbrook Church and Community Centre in Saxton
Road, on July 7. Around 100 graduates are expected to attend, along with
friends, family and employers. The keynote speaker this year is Marcus
Akuhata-Brown from Te Araroa; a qualified teacher and motivational speaker
who has led a number of innovative education programmes addressing the
learning needs of youth at risk and young offenders.
