Craccum: ‘Killdozer’ Incident Reminder To Students, Government
Craccum has joined millions of people around the world yesterday in celebrating the four-year anniversary of the legendary ‘Killdozer’ rampage in Granby, Colorado.
The ‘Killdozer’ was a concrete-shielded modified bulldozer that Granby local Merv Heemeyer constructed as a means of extracting revenge on a local authority that he was convinced conspired to put him out of business and cause him misery. On June 5th, 2004, Merv unleashed Killdozer on Granby, and although no-one else was hurt in the demolition spree, Mr. Heemeyer ended up taking his own life.
Craccum Editor Dan Sloan says that “While the ‘Killdozer’ incident may seem a slightly strange event to mark on one’s calender, we believe the incident is an important reminder about mental health issues and that there are always avenues available to anyone who is prepared to ask for help. The life of a student is not an easy one, and students deal with academic pressures, financial issues and exam stress on a regular basis.” Sloan also went on to say that the introduction of a Universal Student Allowance would go a long way to ensure that there were no student-inspired ‘Killdozer’ incidents in New Zealand by easing the financial burdens that students face.
With exams looming, and and a no-doubt stressful study break just around the corner, Craccum would like to wish all students at Auckland University the very best in their exam preparation.
