Cook it. Climb it.
Video or Design it. You can get a taste for an amazing range
of study options at UCOL’s Winta Flava.
Winta Flava, starting in early July, gives secondary school students - and members of the public - first-hand experience of what’s on offer at UCOL. It will run for a week in early July.
This year Winta Flava is bigger and better, with no fewer than seven activities available to try out at UCOL’s central city campus. The event will showcase some of the programmes available by letting the public sign up to spend a day having a go at one of seven really different study options.
Animate Your World, on Monday 7 July, lets participants create their own working animation and manipulate photographic portraits. Lunch is provided.
Get Adventurous, from Monday 7 to Thursday 10 July, lets sporty types work toward unit standards by taking part in activities like abseiling, climbing and tramping.
Design It, on Tuesday 8 July, lets participants make a product on a computer, using a design brief, then create their own web site. Not only that, there’s lunch too!
Nursing Know-How, Tuesday 8 July, allows curious and caring people to check out the nursing lab and try some interactive activities.
The WF Video Challenge, on Wednesday 9 July, divides participants into teams to design and produce their own small video project from concept to finished product. AND eat lunch.
The Virtual Trip Around New Zealand in One Day, on Wednesday 9 July, tells all (or nearly all) about the where, the why and the what to see around the country.
Food and Fun provides a rare opportunity to spend one half day in the kitchen cooking up a storm, and a half day in the restaurant, learning about ‘drinks mixology’.
External Relations Coordinator Rachel Kinane says when it comes to letting people have a real go, nobody does it better than UCOL. “And we’re different in another way. Our Winta Flava ‘taster’ sessions are geared to interest senior secondary school students – and others in the community. We’re one of the few polytechnics to invite everyone in to see some of the amazing things we do at UCOL.”
She says the week is about showing off some of UCOL’s most popular and interesting programmes. “If someone comes along and tries Food and Fun, then decides they’ve been waiting 20 years to become a chef, that’s fine with us. And we always welcome mature students!”
Rachael says for those further out of town, there’s a free bus from UCOL’s Whanganui campus to Palmerston North and a bus from Levin to Palmerston North.
But of course there’s a catch. Places are limited and it’s first in, first served. Registrations close on 27 June. Go to www.UCOL.ac.nz or call in at the campus for a brochure.
