Turning gateau into Silver

Turning gateau into Silver

UCOL students who took part in the Wellington Regional Culinary Fare at the weekend all came away with medals.

The regional competition is held at the Wellington Food Show and is a forerunner to the prestigious Toque d'Or competition to be held in late August at the National Culinary Fare in Auckland.

UCOL Head of School for Tourism, and Hospitality & Continuing Education Julie Poole says the regional competition is a good training ground for the national event which UCOL students will also enter. “We are really pleased that our six talented students did so well in Wellington,” she says.

“UCOL students have a great track record in culinary fare events and it’s great to see the tradition continued in this way.

A UCOL team of chefs Jenna Kerley, Natalie Scott and waiter Andrew Williams won the Bronze medal in the Ian MacLennan Memorial Team Trophy event.

Student chef Julie Hoeta won a Silver Medal in the Static Fruit Flan category. Rebecca McLeay also won Silver in the Gorgeous Gateau section and Craig Rosvall took Bronze for his Pacific Catch dish.

Julie says everyone involved deserves congratulations, including the tutors who spend time helping the student train for the event.
